Europe wants to cultivate a new generation of sustainable farmers. As part of their push to cut emissions 55% by the end of the decade, policymakers are debating ways to breathe new life into the continent’s growth industry. Two life-changing events led an Illinois family to embrace organic farming. Since 2005, Janie’s Farm has flourished from its original 700-acre footprint into 3,200 acres of land co-owned by a group of farmers who work collaboratively to support the organic movement. Together with his son, Ross Wilken; nephew, Tim Vaske; and neighbor, Ryan Wolfe, Wilken currently owns a 450-acre spread on which he grows his organic crops. A new peer-reviewed study by EWG scientists, analyzed more than 80,000 foods and found that organic products contain significantly fewer ingredients associated with negative health effects. The study focused on packaged foods, which account for more than 60 percent of the calories eaten in the U.S. It is the most comprehensive study to date of the differences between non-organic, or conventional, packaged foods and those certified organic. Organic Valley products keep stacking up accolades for their innovation and quality. They’ve won a PEOPLE Food Award, Parents Snacks Award, and World Dairy Expo Salted Butter Championship Contest. The Organic Center is teaming up with the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Economic Research Service; California State University, Fresno; and Purdue University on a free virtual conference series and hackathon examining technology to address complex issues for organic agriculture.

The study focused on packaged foods, which account for more than 60 percent of the calories eaten in the U.S. It is the most comprehensive study to date of the differences between non-organic, or conventional, packaged foods and those certified organic.
