The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced its intention to invest $300 million into a new Organic Transition Initiative program as part of the USDA Food System Transformation Framework. According to USDA:  “Organic has grown from a niche industry to a $63 billion-plus market – but for the industry to continue meeting demand and providing economic opportunity to U.S. farmers, production must be scaled up,” says Organic Trade Association CEO and Executive Director Tom Chapman. “USDA’s new Organic Transition Initiative will jumpstart that growth by making the organic transition process more accessible and impactful; particularly for beginning and socially disadvantaged farmers and ranchers, who experience unique challenges to accessing resources and support programs. This historic investment in food production, which increases options for American farmers to ‘adopt practices that are both good for their businesses and the climate,’ is a significant win for our industry.” The Environmental Working Group today applauds Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack for announcing a new program to help farmers and ranchers make the transition to organic farming. In the 1960s, the United States was drowning in pollution. Air pollution killed hundreds of New Yorkers, towns stank with sludge and smog, and an Ohio river burst into flames. In response to public fears and public pressure, President Nixon established the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Since then, the EPA has committed to “protecting human health and the environment” with regulations, education, and funding for state and local programs. It claims to rely on “best available scientific information” to promote clean air, land, and water for everyone. Yet, the agency has failed to keep up with emerging threats — in part because of industry sway. A California judge has ordered a halt to a state-run program of spraying pesticides on public lands and some private property, saying officials failed to assess the potential health effects as required. Superior Court Judge James Arguelles ordered the Department of Food and Agriculture to suspend all spraying under the Statewide Plant Pest Prevention and Management Program within two months. When it comes to bread, there’s no one size fits all option. But that doesn’t mean there aren’t some guidelines to help you make the best choices to meet your individual health needs. Of course, a good starting point is checking if a brand uses tons of chemicals like artificial dyes in their breads. Thankfully there are healthy bread brands you can find in any grocery store like Dave’s Killer Bread.
