Organic farmland and retail sales both continued to show growth worldwide, according to data from 191 countries (data as of the end of 2021). Published by FiBL and IFOAM – Organics International, the 24th edition of “The World of Organic Agriculture” shows the trend of overall growth seen in past years continued into 2021, although at a slower pace. Organic retail sales increased by 4 billion euros and reached almost 125 billion euros in 2021, and organic farmland grew to 76.4 million hectares. A Government Accountability Office report to Congress identifies 13 options to enhance climate resilience in agriculture – but it overlooks a solution that is already at our fingertips: investing in organic agriculture. Organic Valley is ‘the first farmer-owned co-op’ to be recognized in Product of the Year USA. The co-operative’s flavored creamers were voted best in the Coffee Creamer category, while value supermarket chain Aldi came on top in Cheese and Frozen Desserts. A build-it-and-they-will-come approach to organic is being developed in the EU. The EU and Irish Government have invested to build organic farming, but markets will be essential to make it work long-term.

Organic farmers gather for the annual NOFA Conference in Burlington

The 41st Annual NOFA VT Winter Conference returned to Burlington over the weekend following a COVID hiatus. The conference, put on by the Northeast Organic Farming Association is a two-day weekend event where organic farmers, food system thinkers, and activists come together. to talk about an economically viable food and farming system for the future of Vermont. Keynote speakers came to talk about how to keep Vermont’s agricultural systems alive. There were workshops like building farm labor and management skills to building biodiversity and ecological resilience on a farm.
