A new report, Merchants of Poison: How Monsanto Sold the World on a Toxic Pesticide by Stacy Malkan, with Kendra Klein, PhD, and Anna Lappé was released December this week. The report covers a case study of disinformation, corrupted science, and manufactured doubt about glyphosate. The analysis draws from thousands of pages of internal corporate documents released during lawsuits brought by farmers, groundskeepers, and everyday gardeners suing Monsanto over allegations that exposure to Roundup caused them to develop cancer; as well as documents obtained through public records requests in a years-long investigation by U.S. Right to Know, a public interest research group. Jeff Huckaby, president, and CEO of the Bakersfield-Calif.-based Grimmway Farms received the Grower of the Year award at the Organic Grower Summit in Monterey, Calif. Huckaby is the fifth recipient of the award, which is presented by the Organic Grower Network. OGS is an annual event focused on organic fruit and vegetable production opportunities and challenges. The Packer’s Organic Fresh Trends 2023 survey polled more than 1,000 consumers in mid-October, discovering differences in how consumers report purchases of fresh fruits and vegetables. In terms of commodities most often purchased exclusively organic, consumers reported a wide range of responses, from just 8% for cantaloupe and sweet corn to 28% for cranberries, 27% for papayas, 26% for Asian pears, 24% for sprouts and artichokes and 22% for kale. In Australia, Farmer Brendon Hoyle is the Australian Organic 2022 Farmer of the Year. He demonstrates how he uses an industrial-sized bug vacuum, towed behind a tractor, to control Queensland fruit flies without spraying pesticides on his crop. This technique is just one of the many reasons he was selected as the winner of this award. Find out why Chris Miller of MOM’s Organic Market is the 2022 produce retailer of the year. Chris Miller is someone who can nerd out with a colleague over a moon and stars variety of watermelon — so much that shoppers will stop and ask about it. That’s because produce is personal for him. It’s a joy and pleasure. He concocted an ataulfo mango song to teach his two children to count to 10. And for him, produce is also political. The core of those beliefs became apparent in Miller after earning an environmental studies degree and taking a cashier position at MOM’s Organic Market while looking for a foothold to start his career.
