Help could be on the way to Vermont organic dairy farmers under a proposed bill. Vermont Senator Peter Welch Thursday introduced the Organic Dairy Assistance, Investment, and Reporting Yields, or the ‘O DAIRY’ Act. It would expand emergency assistance to farmers facing losses because of factors like feed shortages. It would also improve data collection for organic milk production to increase price accuracy, and invest $25 million per year into dairy investments and research. The act is also co-sponsored by Sen. Bernie Sanders.The organic food and beverages market size is forecast to increase by USD 310.08 billion from 2022 to 2027, at a CAGR of 15.85%, according to the recent market study by Technavio. Sharifa Crandall, assistant professor of soilborne disease dynamics and management, will use the $800,000 grant from the agency’s Organic Transitions initiative to investigate methods to suppress soilborne pathogens in vegetable high tunnels.

US farm agency finalizes rule to require outdoor access for organic chickens

The U.S. Department of Agriculture on Wednesday issued long-awaited final regulations to standardize living conditions of organic livestock and require that chickens raised organically have regular access to outdoor pasture. The rule will close loopholes that allowed some organic egg producers to meet outdoor access requirements for organic egg-laying hens with open-air porches, rather than pasture.
