The price gap between organic and nonorganic groceries is smaller than ever. Inflation, coupled with rising demand for organic foods has made them more affordable. We did the math to see how much you’ll spend buying only organic in 2022. A study by Dataweave for Axios found that private-label organic items were just 14.7 percent more expensive than regular food in January of 2022. That same figure was 22.7 percent in April of 2021. Purdue University has received a four-year, $1.5 million grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture to explore the ecology of organic cropping systems in Indiana, Illinois, and Wisconsin. Purdue, in collaboration with the University of Wisconsin-Madison and Western Illinois University in Macomb, will assess weed, insect, and pathogen pressure on corn, soybeans, and small grains cultivated under standard and ecologically intensified organic farming systems, along with comparing yields across systems. The Organic Grower Summit, presented by Western Growers and Organic Produce Network, will honor long-time organic grower Jeff Huckaby as the recipient of the fifth annual Grower of the Year award. Huckaby, President, and CEO of Grimmway Farms were selected based on his ongoing commitment and dedication to excellence in organic production, organic industry leadership, and innovation. But pesticides are also responsible for an estimated 11,000 human fatalities and the poisoning of 385 million people every year, the report finds.
