Find out how Naturepedic is celebrating Earth Month and supporting a healthy planet in this exclusive Q&A with Only Organic!

Why is it important for your brand to celebrate Earth Month and how are you celebrating throughout the month?

Earth Month is an important time to focus on our environment and the impact each of us as individuals and as companies have on our planet. Naturepedic is celebrating Earth Month by advocating for supply chain transparency and educating consumers on the practice of greenwashing. Greenwashing is when more time and money are spent marketing a brand as environmentally friendly than minimizing its environmental impact. Many brands do this because they understand they can profit significantly off of aligning themselves with the environmentally conscious. Naturepedic strives to remain transparent – we share exactly what goes into our mattresses and the harmful chemicals used in other mattresses and home goods. Our goal is to educate consumers so they can make informed decisions about their own health and safety.

What does your brand do to help create a healthier environment and to treat the planet more respectfully every day?

Naturepedic is conscious of our footprint – where and how we supply our materials for our mattresses, sheets, and pillows. Our focus is on the health and safety of our customers, which ultimately goes hand-in-hand in a more sustainable approach to our business. We work with farmers we know and trust. By working closely with our trusted farmers, we know exactly how they care for their crop. Also, not many people know this, but 80% of our workforce are Amish. The Amish lifestyle is one of very low environmental impact. We’ve worked with our employees to refine our own practices and are constantly looking at our operations to improve the ways we contribute to the solution, instead of the problem.

Why is it important for your brand to be organic?

We take pride in our organic certifications because they are tokens of our commitment to promoting safe, organic sleep. Today, we are certified to the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS), the Organic Content Standard (OCS), and the Global Organic Latex Standard (GOLS), just to name a few of the most stringent ones! Each provides verification of our claims to you.

Beyond this, we see the value of eliminating chemicals from the products we invite into our homes. For us, it’s about how these chemicals, which don’t occur in nature, impact not only the environment but our human health. It’s important for us to get the cleanest, safest, highest quality materials to build our mattresses and those happen to be organic too. We spend 1/3 of our lives sleeping on a mattress – that’s 1/3 of our lives exposed to what’s inside our mattresses during our most vulnerable, restorative time. We believe everyone deserves comfort and safety when they sleep.

At Naturepedic, change starts with a mattress, but we also believe our commitment to eliminating chemicals can have a far-reaching impact on the health of ourselves and our planet.

What does organic do to make the planet healthier?

Organic practices eliminate the use of pesticides and synthetic fertilizers, which helps keep our Earth’s ecosystem in balance and reduces our exposure to harmful chemicals – many of which we know very little about and what little we do know confirms their dangers on human health.

How can consumers celebrate Earth Month?

Get back to basics. Enjoy the little things. Take care of yourself and your family. Understand where the products you welcome into your home come from, what they’re made of, and the people behind the brands. What are their values, and do they align with your own? Earth Month is part of our beautiful spring season – a time when we can get outside to plant gardens and welcome pollinators who contribute to our food supply and fresh air. We believe that living organically is an act of love – love for oneself, love for all living things, and love for this planet.
