The Environmental Protection Agency is overdue for a new wakeup call: this time on the dangers of neonicotinoids, known as “neonics,” a class of pesticides that leaches through the soil and into the water, permeates the food we eat and makes its way into our bodies. From pigeons to dandelions, New York Artist, Candace Thompson’s Collaborative Urban Resilience Banquet connects urban dwellers with a city’s foraged and scavenged bounty. Her intention is to reintroduce wild, edible foods. Two German beekeepers staged a sticky protest by pouring a bucket of honey onto the ministry steps, saying it was contaminated with high levels of glyphosate that was sprayed onto fields near their apiculture business in Brandenburg state, which surrounds Berlin. Michigan sues 17 chemical companies for PFAS contamination. The state spends $25 million per year on finding PFAS contamination. Cleanup of the “forever chemicals” could cost multiples more of that amount. While Michigan is trying to protect residents and the environment from the per- and poly-fluorinated compounds, now Attorney General Dana Nessel is targeting chemical companies – and the funding they could bring to solve the problem. Investors in Bayer AG, the German company that bought Monsanto in 2018, are keeping a close eye on the status of three trials currently still on the docket to get underway this month. Six trials were initially set to take place in January, but three have recently been “postponed.” Sources say the postponements are part of the process of obtaining an overall settlement with several plaintiffs’ attorneys who have large numbers of cases pending.
