Our Ethics
At Only Organic we feel strongly about making our contribution to both the local environment, local economy and generally being good and responsible citizens. Whilst we are all able to make differing levels of commitment and contribution we feel we ought to lead the way by setting a good example. We don’t wear hair shirts and are far from faultless, but we do try to do our bit!
Here is a list of what we do currently. If you feel we are missing something obvious then please Contact Us with your suggestions.
- Communications: We operate all our telephone and broadband through an ethical co-op called, appropriately enough, The Phone Coop
- Energy: We buy our energy from Ecotricity and it all comes from renewable sources
- Packaging: Your order is delivered in completely biodegradable bags from Bio Bags
- Employment: We are proud of the fact that we employ local people
- Sourcing: We make every effort to source locally (local to you, not local to other parts of the country!) farmed organic produce. We use several small-scale local suppliers. The reason we don’t have more local produce is that there is a dearth of organically certified farms around here.
- Recycling: We really recycle. When I asked Bucks County Council why they didn’t apply the same effort to business recycling as they do to home I was told “we aren’t targeted on it”! This is a terrible attitude in my humble opinion.
- Driving: This is a very thorny issue and we have yet to square the circle on this. We do use a modern Ford Transit van with the smallest diesel engine and use sophisticated software to plan our delivery routes in the most efficient way possible
- Food Miles: Several of the UK’s largest box schemes involve an awful lot of driving (lorries & vans) to get the box from them to you. Funnily, they don’t advertise this fact! To the best of our ability we keep the distance your food travels to a minimum by buying locally and then aggregating the remainder of our weekly order to one wholesaler
- Paper Usage: Where possible we try to do as much of our work as practicable electronically. Our weekly order notification and newsletter, your invoices and all card paymemts are done (securely when appropriate) via computer. We abhor wasted paper and ink so try to keep it to an absolute minimum
